I've noticed that about $250 is the break point between mediocre digital cameras and the really good ones. Once you get above $250 you really start getting some grat features. Just a few years ago, any camera you could get close to this price ran on cheap batteries and had an optical viewfinder. The pictures were pretty low quality. Today you get a ton of megapixals, recharable batteries, high definition video and an LED screen. In fact, today's cellphones have better picture quality than digital cameras had just 10 years ago.
Today $250 can buy you a lot of camera. That is what a Canon PowerShot SX21OSI with 14 Megapixals, 14x wide angle optical, image stabilization and a 3 inch LCD screen costs at Amazon right now. All of the brands such as Panasonic, Sony, Canon, CyberShot and Fuji have similar features. Many even have facial recognition and smile detection. Of course, all these brands have a different take on exactily which of these features are important to you. At the $250 price point you aren't going to get everthing that you could get for $1,000 of even $2,000, but you do get a vary capable camera. They won't be able to shoot in real low light, you won't have split second shutter speed for repeated actions shots and a few other things. But if you are not a pro and just want to take quick snap shot for the memories, these cameras are perfect for you. On top of that, you will get a lot of digital photo goodness while saving a bunch of money.
For about the same price you can get a Sony Cyber-Shot W290, which cnet recently reviewed and said was "an excellent, well-balanced compact camera." For a little more you can buy a Samsung Dual View TL225 which has a front LCD screen that makes it easy for you to get into the picture. It also has a huge 3.5 inch LCD touch screen on the back. It automaticly adjusts the itself to take the best possible picture for the lighting conditions. You can even turn off all the automatic adjustments if you want, to control the picture manually. The controls are on the back touch screen and are really easy to use. The picture quality is great also. How about the Panasonic Lumix ZS3. It also has a great price and is also a High Definition camcorder. It even has a dedicated record button for video, takes stunning HD video footage and has great sound. It was recently followed by the even more feature packed ZS7 which features GPS as well as many other features.
I would take a good look at the Panasonic Lumix ZS7, their latest model. It has a lot of positive ratings on Amazon and offers the most features for it's low price of about $250. The Samsung probably has a better interface and great picture quality and the Fuji F700EXR has amazing low light capability. Also, don't forget the Canon PowerShot SD1400IS for a bargain price of $179.
